BUSINESS
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
MOOD Signs
The old saying 'what a difference a year makes' may ring true for many, but for new
local business owner, Robert Mood, nine months was all that was needed.
Since forming MOOD Signs just last April with
his brother-in-law Brett Armstrong, the
Crowborough-based company has gone on to
achieve international recognition, namely as the
crowned winners of the Sign Makers category
at the 2013 coveted European Sign Federation
Awards.
The European Sign Federation (ESF) is a
European-wide association and a globally
renowned foundation within the sign industry. In
fact, 2013 was the first competition to be
launched by the federation since they formed in
1966, so to enter and subsequently beat
hundreds of other entries from some 23 European
countries, was quite a feat. More so, it was a
powerful platform and true testament to the
calibre of Robert's work.
With over 17 years of valuable experience
in the sign industry, in both the UK and Australia,
company director Robert's key strengths are
found in the design and manufacture of bespoke
architectural signage. Over the years he has
produced signs for a number of leading high
street names and played a pivotal role in both
their design and sustainability.
Meanwhile, Brett takes more of a holistic
approach, utilising his skills as a successful
investor with a background in retail and staff
sourcing, to succeed in his role as director of
operations and finance. Combine such skills with
Roberts and it's little wonder MOOD Signs has
already left a lasting impression.
Following the accreditation, the business
moved into a new 1,500 square foot
manufacturing facility. Here, the first floor
incorporates a design and print area, enabling
the team to produce an extensive array of vinyl
films, whilst the ground floor accommodates a
main manufacturing space with the latest CNC
machinery and an array of workshop tools and
acrylic fabrication equipment.
This expansion has enabled MOOD Signs
to produce some of the highest quality signage
on the market, which in turn has meant they can
offer competitive prices. What's more, when it
comes to being flexible in their services, the
independently owned business prides itself on
being able to find a practical bespoke solution
to the most complex of design briefs and produce
stunning one-offs with a very short turnaround.
Robert's vast skills and experience allows
him to map out timescales and prices from
sketches and consultations with individual clients,
making for efficient production and a quality end
product. This fresh approach and level of service
is where MOOD Signs excels.
As Brett explains: “Robert is a very talented
sign maker, his success in winning the award
testifies unequivocally to this fact. The direction
of our business will be influenced very much by
the special skills and strengths that we have
identified and Robert’s own unique talents as a
true craftsmen. Collectively, these will drive the
business forward.”
Well aware that a strong visual presence
is essential to promoting a client's business,
MOOD Signs has a countless range of options
available. From budget, shop and exhibition
signage, to vehicle liveries, traditional and Robert's
forte, architectural signage, the work undertaken
149
to date reflects the company’s early expectations
of becoming a serious force in this highly
specialised field.
In a bid to inspire customers, a showroom
space with examples of previously completed
work has also been integrated into the reception
area.
MOOD Signs are fully committed to using
sustainable and environmental credentials when
it comes to the products they produce and sell.
Looking ahead, the business is now recruiting
for an experienced sales executive, with ambitious
plans to expand their operation from smaller
independent businesses to larger blue-chip
organisations throughout the South East and
beyond.
As MOOD Signs really has proved 'the
possibilities are endless', it's hard to foresee
anything other than roaring success in the coming
year and beyond for these dedicated
professionals.
