NEWS THE BUILDINGS OF ENGLAND KENT: NORTH EAST AND EAST Author, John Newman's brilliant revised volume in the celebrated Buildings of England series, Kent: North East and East, was published this October by Canterbury Cathedral, cloister, S walk, Yale c. 1390–7 © Angelo Hornak University Press, marking a further landmark in the understanding of the heritage of Kent. The ‘Pevsner’ series, founded in 1951, has become the byword for authoritative and comprehensive coverage of England’s architecture. Churches and public buildings are covered in depth, unusual and unpredictable structures discussed, and castles and mansions are described in detail. Contemporary architecture is included too, viewed with a critical but appreciative eye. Major themes are surveyed in a historical introduction, including chapters from specialist contributors. John Newman’s two-volume survey of Kent was first published in 1969. The new edition is based on the old text, yet thoroughly revised, updated, and substantially increased in length. This, the companion to the acclaimed western Kent volume published in 2012, includes the city of Canterbury, the county’s single greatest treasure. From the town's glorious cathedral and precious remains of St Augustine’s mission churches, to the royal stronghold of Dover, Deal and Walmer and the bypassed medieval port of Sandwich, this volume covers it all. The text also contains numerous maps, plans, illustrations and over a hundred new colour photographs. Publication follows years of work by John, a professional architectural historian and life-long Kent resident. Every parish and village has been investigated, thousands of buildings assessed and published sources and archives explored. The text also owes a great debt to the many local people — historians, librarians, archivists, clergy and churchwardens, head teachers, house-owners and custodians — who have answered queries and allowed visits. The result is the essential handbook and companion for everyone, resident or visitor, who wants to know more about the buildings and history of Kent. John Newman first became involved in The Buildings of England as Nikolaus Pevsner's driver in Berkshire and Hampshire, and as the coauthor of Dorset. Besides the Kentish volumes, he has contributed Glamorgan and Gwent/Monmouthshire to the Buildings of Wales series, and is author of the revised Shropshire volume (2006). www.yalebooks.co.uk VOTING FOR THE TASTE OF KENT AWARDS 2014 IS NOW OPEN The public voting is now open in Kent’s most popular food and drink awards – the Taste of Kent Awards 2014 to celebrate Kent’s food and drink heroes.
