Head west on River Road out of New Orleans for a day of history, beautiful gardens and fantastic food. With its' generous helping of Southern hospitality, Houmas House Plantation is also the perfect place to lay your head. Guest cottages nestle amongst the oaks and flowers. Columns mirror the grand features of a Sugar Baron's home in miniature. And lavish old world style furnishings meet modern comfort with Wi-Fi and ensuite Keurigs.

Latil's Landing Restaurant showcases Chef Jeremy Langlois' “Nouveau Louisiana” style. Try deliciously original "Chopped Salad" featuring blue crab and ice cream cone crumble. Or follow your nose in the morning - warmed cane syrup and fresh baked bread lead to famous New Orleans Bananas Foster at the Carriage House - as decadent and delicious as it smells!

The 'bones' of Houmas' 38-acre garden include garconierres where sons of the wealthy were housed, ancient oaks, magnolias, and mossy Louisiana brick. The rest is up to artist, poet, and Houmas head gardener Craig Black who fills the space with native Louisiana plants. While I'm a total plant-lover, my favorite garden feature is the gaggle of flying pigs - fat, rusted and soaring - with the backdrop of a grand estate home behind.

After a long day of touristy pursuits it's time for serenity. Settle in a rocking chair on the porch with your Mint Julep to watch the sun go down. Enjoy some Southern hospitality. And stay awhile!
