Innovations Into Success Summer 2016 | Page 43

Babraham Research Campus has established itself as a hub of bioscience innovation at the heart of the Cambridge cluster
tenants . There are various packages available to access the space and equipment housed within it .
Companies don ’ t have to be based on site to be part of the community , our virtual tenancy service offers access to many of the benefits of the Campus without having to take on the cost of physical laboratory and office space . The service is aimed at small biotech businesses looking to establish their first commercial base , but are not quite ready to take physical space .
Each year BBT seeks to encourage and enhance bioscience investment through presentation and networking opportunities for early-stage biotechnology and med tech companies and investors at an annual the Biotechnology Investment Forum ( BIF ).
Access to world-class scientific facilities Companies located on the Babraham Research Campus also have access to the Babraham Institute ’ s world-class scientific facilities and expertise . These facilities include bioinformatics , imaging , mass spectrometry ( including lipid analysis ), next generation sequencing and flow cytometry . The campus also has a state-of-the-art small animal facility which is available for use by tenant companies .
Catalysing Academic-Commercial Collaboration A clear draw of the campus is the opportunity for companies to interact and collaborate with the internationally-recognised research undertaken at the Babraham Institute . The Institute seeks to understand how signal transduction and epigenetic genome regulation coordinate physiological adaptations during the lifespan of an organism . For example , by determining how the body reacts to dietary and environmental stimuli , and manages infections , it aims to improve lifelong health and promote healthier ageing .
The Institute aims to maximise the impact of its research through knowledge exchange and commercialisation , and its scientists work with other organisations ( from small start-ups to multinational companies ) to translate that research into action for social and economic benefit . This includes collaborative research projects with industry and providing expert advice via consultancies .
The translation of the Institute ’ s intellectual property is managed by Babraham Institute Enterprise Ltd and is achieved through licensing technologies and creating spin-out companies , such as Crescendo Biologics Ltd which is based on the Babraham Research Campus . Several events are organised throughout the year to bring together Institute researchers with commercial scientists on site , providing opportunities for sharing scientific progress and knowledge and networking . Many of the companies on site work closely with the Institute , for example by collaborating with the academic scientists and using Institute services and facilities .
Campus Community Situated on an attractive 450-acre parkland estate , the campus blends modern laboratory facilities with historic buildings in a spacious , beautifully landscaped setting .
The campus offers its tenants excellent amenities : fully-equipped meeting rooms and conferencing facilities , bar and refectory , a sports and social club , gym , tennis court and football pitch . Babraham ’ s Nursery offers a safe , attractive and stimulating environment for the formative pre-school years .
