The Institute of Science and Technology ( IST ) is the professional body for people in specialist , technical and managerial roles across every field : science , arts , engineering , industry , local authorities , government departments , schools , FE , HE , research , analytical and health facilities , and many more , in the UK and overseas .
A number of issues are high on the IST ’ s agenda . Promoting a wider understanding and recognition of the professional standing of our members is essential , as is continuing to expand our vibrant community of specialist , technical and managerial colleagues who work together to help make a difference and shape the future .
One of the IST ’ s key principles is to be fully inclusive . To achieve this , we make many resources available to all of our members and special interest groups : help and advice networks , skills training programmes , specialist forums , recognised qualifications and courses , continuing career development programmes , mentoring and guidance .
A key development in recent years is that the IST has become one of the Science Council ’ s member bodies licensed to award professional registration at Registered Science Technician ( RSciTech ), Registered Scientist ( RSci ) and Chartered Scientist ( CSci ) level . For members working in non-science environments we offer the IST ’ s Registered Practitioner status .
The IST continues to develop and expand its horizons so it can best position itself to support its members and their needs in the 21st century . Science and technology continually move forward , and many new and exciting fields have opened up . This is where an increasingly multi-disciplined approach towards developing new and innovative solutions is helping change the face of industry , research and education , and we embrace it .
