Colchester has regular , fast mainline rail services to London Liverpool Street ( 49 minutes ) and London Stansted airport is 50 minutes by road .
Master plan and developments The site is fully serviced and immediately available for development . It has planning permission for the development of 400,000 sq ft ( 37,200 sq m ) of office / R & D accommodation and ancillary facilities and a new master plan which creates opportunities for a range of flexible high-quality accommodation specifically for knowledge-intensive businesses . In 2014 Parkside Office Village was opened , funded by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership , offering nine small office buildings ranging from 110 sq m ( 1,195 sq ft ) to 315 sq m ( 3380 sq ft ) on flexible lease terms – with a further phase now underway . Research strengths In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework the University of Essex was ranked in the top 20 of UK universities for research excellence , and the top 5 for social science research . The University is leading the way internationally in Big Data – advanced data analytics and data science , that is helping to shape thinking , gain unique insight , and solve practical business problems .
