YSI 2900 Series Analysers
From Cancer Research to Biomass Production
The life sciences division of Xylem ’ s YSI brand has become a significant contributor to cancer research over the past few years . Already cited in a number of significant papers , scientists have been using the YSI 2900 Series biochemistry analyser due to its ability to determine a number of key analytes in rapid succession .
The recent paper entitled “ Characterization of the Role Rab25 in Energy Metabolism and Cancer Using Extracellular Flux Analysis and Material Balance ” published in Methods of Molecular Biology describes how scientists , Shreya Mitra et al utilised a YSI 2900 for monitoring glucose , lactate , glutamine and glutamate in characterizing the role of Rab25 in energy metabolism and cancer using extracellular flux analysis and material balance .
The authors state the YSI 2900 proved instrumental for determining a precise and quantitative approach to interrogate the role of Rab25 as well as other Rab GTPases in central carbon energy metabolism . The full article is available to read online at Springer International publications .
The same instrument has also played key roles within biomass research and production . The publication ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering recently shows how a YSI 2900 Series biochemistry analyser was used to monitor the glucose in a saccharification process of Loblolly pine biomass feedstocks .
Glucose monitoring is essential in determining the effectiveness of enzymatic hydrolysis citrate buffer strengths on pine tree biomass , a technique common to other biofuel production fuels .

The 2900 Series comprises three models including the latest on-line version that uses the Sitini On-line Sampler to automatically draw sample from the bioreactor , then delivering it directly to the instrument with little or no risk of contamination as lines are flushed after each draw and subsequently flooded with antiseptic until next use .
