Enabling science at the nanoscale

Prof Angus Kirkland
PROJECT CO-ORDINATOR , ESTEEM2
The Enabling Science and Technology through European Electron Microscopy ( ESTEEM2 ) project integrates key facilities and state-of-the-art technologies in the field of advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy ( TEM ) for materials science applications . It provides the academic and industrial research community in the physical sciences free access to some of the most powerful characterisation techniques available at the nanoscale

Fifteen academic pa rtners contribute to the ESTEEM2 project , representing the leading European advanced TEM laboratories . Two EU SMEs in electron microscopy ( CEOS and NanoGAS - see separate articles ) are also part of the ESTEEM2 consortium . All partners have available the latest generation of TEM instrumentation which enable unique experiments in electron energy loss spectroscopy , ultrahigh resolution imaging at the atomic level , holography for measuring local fields , tomography to provide 3D information and advanced diffraction . The partners can also carry out in-situ measurements under at elevated temperatures under gas and liquid environments .

ESTEEM2 is the primary European portal for industrial and academic users who need access to state-of-the-art TEM instrumentation , methodology or tools . Since the project start in 2012 ESTEEM2 access providers have hosted more than 350 research projects coming from all parts of Europe , amounting to 3,550 free-at-point-of-use access days .
