Officially inaugurated by Margaret Thatcher in the mid-1980s , ISIS is a pulsed neutron and muon source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire , one of several research facilities operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council ( STFC ).
The ISIS neutron and muon source supports a national and international community of more than 3,000 scientists for research into many subjects , ranging from clean energy and the environment , pharmaceuticals and health care , through to nanotechnology and materials engineering , catalysis and polymers , and on to fundamental studies of materials .
ISIS produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of dedicated instruments .
These beams of subatomic particles show us where atoms are and what they are doing . By studying materials at the atomic level , we can understand their structure and properties , and subsequently design new materials that are useful to society . Examples of these developments include :
