innovation in a supportive environment , and they can tap into our experience of growing successful businesses in specialised incubator environments .”
In March 2011 , the Boots site in Beeston was awarded Enterprise Zone status by the government ; designated areas with incentives to encourage the creation of new businesses , including exemption from business rates .
David believes this is a huge incentive for companies looking to locate at MediCity : “ The Boots site in Beeston covers 279 acres ( 113 hectares ) and the vision is to create a UK cluster for innovation in health , beauty and wellbeing companies in Nottingham . The result for our companies will be greater opportunities for collaborations , inter-trading and attracting further inward investment .”
The UK life science sector currently employs around 183,000 people in 4,400 companies , and has an estimated value of £ 56 billion . It also ranks top in attracting direct inward investment , which probably reflects the significant level of expertise grown up around several global pharmaceutical companies , university research excellence and new smaller innovative firms .
David believes redeveloping sites such as MediCity help demonstrate the attractiveness of the UK as a location for investment .

“ Sites like BioCity Scotland , Alderley Park in Cheshire and Discovery Park in Kent , once home to major pharma organisations , are now being repurposed in some cases with the help of national and local government support to house a new generation of job-creating companies .
He added : “ At MediCity we have developed a close collaboration with Nottingham ’ s two leading universities which has enabled several spin-out companies to find laboratory and office facilities with us . In fact , entrepreneurs from as far away as the South West have chosen to relocated to the city , no doubt drawn by the attractive and cost-effective business support infrastructure and the availability of world-class facilities .”
So how might MediCity and health technology develop in the future ? “ We can already see an emphasis on certain product themes ; some companies might be more clinically focused but in a matrix type of way around emerging technologies and drawing from a really strong network of collaborators .
“ We are keen to encourage the expansion of a thriving community which is be both resident and virtual but that can meet on a regular basis and share experiences . MediCity Scotland opened just a few months ago , and we would like to see MediCity develop as a global brand .”
