As a publication dedicated to the evolution
of tattoo culture and lifestyle, it is important
to pay homage to the roots of where it all
began. In The Butterfly Tattoo Effect, Uncle
Bob takes us back to the old school, a time
that helped revolutionize the tattoo industry
into what it is today. Without the stories of
yore, a lot of the history of this culture would
be lost. With the clash of the old and the new,
a new wave of tattoo culture is emerging.
In music, we cover the resurrection of multiinstrumentalist and musician, SKOLD. Most
widely known for his work and collaboration
with Marilyn Manson, Tim Sköld has largely
influenced the progression of rock, metal,
and industrial music. During their recent
tour, The Undoing, SKOLD held an intimate
performance at the Summit Music Hall in
Denver, Colorado. This is where I witnessed
the drumming of Eli James, who is now one
of my favorite drummers of all time, along
with Joey Jordison formerly of Slipknot and
Travis Barker. As a former drummer, it is still
one of my greatest passions to watch badass
percussionists kill it on stage.
This month, I am reminded of one of my
favorite quotes - “those who don’t believe
in magic will never find it,” by Roald Dahl
who is greatly known for his works, James
and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory. It’s a quote that I remind
myself of often because it expands my mind
beyond what I think is possible. That’s why I
was so excited when we got the opportunity
to feature magician and illusionist, Joseph
Réohm, because he is proof that nothing
is ever what it seems and that time is the
greatest illusion of all.
Issue No. 44 is a memoir of tattoo culture
past, present, and future. With another month
dedicated to the exploration of the evolution
of tattoo culture and lifestyle ahead, I ask
you, “what ‘InkSpires’ you?”

With the heat of the summer in full bloom,
I have Cabo San Lucas on my mind. In
February, I took a trip to Mexico, where
I explored the culture in conjunction to
how it relates to tattooing. For a week, I
documented my adventures of Cabo, a
collective of stories I couldn’t wait to tell. In
the travel section of this issue is a photo
essay accompanied by those stories.
