I Smacked You In the Mouth

For No Good Reason

by Carly McKenna '14

I smacked you in the mouth for no good reason

Like a sour lemon, or the sound of balloons popping in your ears

Maybe even that 5am wake up call

I smacked you in the mouth for the people who never had the courage to tell you to shut up

Your loud lips electrifying the room, bouncing off the walls

Your never ending reasons for why you were right and I was wrong

I can hear you rambling even when you’re not in my presense

Your voice has me look over my shoulder when it’s whispering in the wind

Your eyes spinning like a hurricane

Buzzing around like a broken pager

The sound of instruments laughing

Slumping down like a bull dogs wrinkles or that oh-so-cute baby fat

Hanging off like a monkey in a jungle

Rippling over you

Wrinkling your clenched lips to the taste of a sour patch

The cold slab of tile creeping up like a city of ants on a sweltering picnic day

You listen, whispers growing louder stretching into shouts

A boxing ring being built in the shadows of the wave crashing over you
