THE EYES OF MY FATHER

by Asmita Patel '14

The eyes of my Father,

The dark black eyes of my Father,

I see them everyday,

The sorrow of his face,

The struggle of his life,

Is hidden behind the black.

I try to dig into his eyes,

But his love for me,

Stops me from digging,

Like pressing against the current.

I imagine if I could get beyond the dark,

But,

The truth is I am not strong enough.

I might unbury the fertile soil of his past,

The busy streets of Chikhali,

The hard hours spent waiting for light to shine in his eyes.

He was the youngest in his family of 9, 3 died so there would have been twelve.

Maybe this is where the darkness comes from

Growing up 25 people shared our home,

we had a farm,

A piece of my grandfather's land

Each brother farmed their own land,

But we always ate together and helped each other out.

He studied to get his master's degree while also taking care of our family,

Running a shop, farming his land.

Lots of responsibility, It was a hard time.

Maybe this is where some of the darkness comes from.
