The air was crisp and the breeze
was light when more than 200
volunteers came out to give
back to their community at this
month’s Earth Day-inspired
Community Clean Team
volunteer work day. Monument and UN Plaza and
tackling graffiti and litter along
the neighborhoods’ commercial
corridors. When the work was
done, participants shared in a
communal meal to celebrate a job
well done.
The April 22 event kicked off at
Boeddeker Park with a pumped
up crowd ready to clean and
green the South of Market,
Tenderloin and Mission Bay
neighborhoods. You could feel
the positive energy radiating as
friends, families and co-workers
broke off into teams to do their
work. Although Earth Day is a once-
a-year celebration, Public Works
believes that taking care of our
planet is an integral part of daily
life.
Working side by side with our
crews, volunteers celebrated
Earth Day by planting trees
along McCoppin and Market
streets, sprucing up Pioneer
Every day of the year, you can
find our crews giving back to the
Earth by planting trees, cleaning
up garbage and advocating for
a healthier, more sustainable
environment. We invite you to
join us in the tradition of treating
every day like it's Earth Day.
Each month Community
Clean Team visits a different
supervisorial district where
volunteers join together to spruce
up their neighborhoods.
Since the program’s inception in
2000, we have added more than
33,900 plants to public spaces
and painted over more than 3.6
million square feet of graffiti –
making it Public Works’ largest
and longest-running volunteer
program.
Join us on May 13 as we visit
District 8 to clean and green the
Castro, Noe Valley and Glen
Park neighborhoods. As always,
registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
and the speaking program begins
at 9 a.m. For more information
