The air was crisp and the breeze was light when more than 200 volunteers came out to give back to their community at this month’s Earth Day-inspired Community Clean Team volunteer work day. Monument and UN Plaza and tackling graffiti and litter along the neighborhoods’ commercial corridors. When the work was done, participants shared in a communal meal to celebrate a job well done. The April 22 event kicked off at Boeddeker Park with a pumped up crowd ready to clean and green the South of Market, Tenderloin and Mission Bay neighborhoods. You could feel the positive energy radiating as friends, families and co-workers broke off into teams to do their work. Although Earth Day is a once- a-year celebration, Public Works believes that taking care of our planet is an integral part of daily life. Working side by side with our crews, volunteers celebrated Earth Day by planting trees along McCoppin and Market streets, sprucing up Pioneer Every day of the year, you can find our crews giving back to the Earth by planting trees, cleaning up garbage and advocating for a healthier, more sustainable environment. We invite you to join us in the tradition of treating every day like it's Earth Day. Each month Community Clean Team visits a different supervisorial district where volunteers join together to spruce up their neighborhoods. Since the program’s inception in 2000, we have added more than 33,900 plants to public spaces and painted over more than 3.6 million square feet of graffiti – making it Public Works’ largest and longest-running volunteer program. Join us on May 13 as we visit District 8 to clean and green the Castro, Noe Valley and Glen Park neighborhoods. As always, registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the speaking program begins at 9 a.m. For more information about Community Clean Team click here or view the season’s calendar for future dates.
