Behind the Wheel

Students must successfully complete a skid recovery, an ABS braking exercise, a timed precision course, and a written examination in order to graduate.

Making an Arrest

In the unfortunate situations when offenders do not take advantage of opportunities to successfully live in their communities, it is the responsibility of DCS officers to hold the offenders they supervise accountable. Cadets are trained to function as a team when planning and executing arrests in order to maximize safety and efficiency.

Motivational Speaking

DCS officers receive extensive training in the evidence-based communication style of Motivational interviewing (MI). MI involves interacting with the offender in a way that develops a collaborative environment and promotes positive change. Officers learn to utilize empathy and active listening skills to empower offenders to resolve ambivalence and make better choices.

Cool in a Crisis

Officers in the field will encounter an endless possibility of circumstances. Cadets participate in classes such as Comprehensive Crisis Training and Situational Awareness to acquire the skills needed for consistently making smart and safe decisions while in the community. These include scenario training using real houses and community centers, encountering pepper spray, and working cohesively in team situations.
