South Fayette , Keystone Oaks and Pittsburgh Public ’ s Schiller Middle School Students Design a Café Space for the Energy Innovation Center
What began as a business-to-school project that was new to the middle school level became a very rewarding and beneficial learning experience for everyone involved . Nine students from South Fayette Middle School , along with student representatives from Keystone Oaks and Schiller Middle School , partnered with the Energy Innovation Center ( EIC ) to design its café space . The EIC is recognized as both a historical building as well as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ( LEED ) certified building . Therefore , the students had to design a café area that considered both of these aspects . The students , along with three mentor teachers , committed a lot of time to develop a thoughtful , research-based , and innovative proposal for an EIC café space .
Students had to utilize many content-based skills in order to prepare for their presentation and to be knowledgeable of their business proposal . Additionally , they had to utilize and

62 South Fayette enhance skills such as collaboration , public speaking , compromise , innovation , and design . All of these skills combined made for an invaluable experience that mirrors expectations in business and the real world . Covering the food preparatory and service area , from the seating plan to the actual menu , the students presented researched-based ideas , as well as ideas that are not even on the market yet . They included artwork , a fully designed app , a studentproduced commercial , and 3-D visual representations of their plan . In all , they created a presentation that was a sum of their strengths and knowledge . It was an outstanding representation of our students , staff , and educational programming as they prepare for the next steps and their future pathways .
