South Fayette and Penn Hills High School Students Partner on ALCOSAN Project

On January 26 , South Fayette High School student consultants traveled to Penn Hills High School for the kickoff of their authentic problem solving project with their ALCOSAN partners . Sponsored by the Consortium for Public Education ’ s Student Powered Solutions Program ( SPS ) to provide real-world project-based learning experience , the two schools began their collaboration to provide recommendations for solutions to reduce storm-water runoff on their campuses .
ALCOSAN ’ s civil engineer , Julia Spicher , presented valuable information regarding the major issues for the facility ’ s treatment plant when there are overflow concerns . Her information provided the students with the basis for their projects as they began their research and data collection to formulate their solutions .
During the kickoff , the SPS team provided an engineering team-building exercise that combined seven teams of students from both schools to solve the challenge . The success of the exercise was not in the team that won but the collaboration that took part within the teams as students from two districts bonded to solve the problem .
As with all of the school-to-business partnerships South Fayette Township School District has embraced , the ALCOSAN project is an example of preparing our students for the real world they will be entering after high school .
