GREYBROOKE GARDEN CLUB PROGRAMS
Regular meetings of Greybrooke Garden Club are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a . m . in the Fellowship Hall of Parkwood Presbyterian Church , located at 4289 Mt . Royal Boulevard in Hampton Township . Members reside in various communities of the North Hills and guests are welcome at all meetings . FLOWERS AND FUN BLOOM AT SHALER PLANT SALE
Shaler Garden Club will hold its 64th annual plant sale on Saturday , May 6 , from 9 a . m . to noon at Kiwanis Park on Wetzel Road in Glenshaw . Hardy perennials from members ’ gardens will be offered at bargain prices , along with herbs , vegetables , houseplants , potted arrangements and bulbs . A basket auction , wine auction , bake sale and flea market add to the festivities . Children can enjoy face painting and craft activities as well as a scavenger hunt , prizes and fun activities about butterflies . For just $ 1 , kids can even decorate a flower pot and plant a flower for Mom as a Mother ’ s Day gift . Admission is free . Come rain or shine . Proceeds benefit community projects and philanthropic donations of the Shaler Garden Club .

MILLVALE RECOGNIZED AS A PLATINUM CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE MUNICIPALITY
In November , Millvale announced that it is the first borough and the fourth municipality in Pennsylvania to earn Platinum Certification ( highest performance level ) through the Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification program . It had previously earned Gold Certification through the program . The municipality completed the program ’ s rigorous assessment / checklist , which tracks 131 policies and practices that define a sustainable community . In order to achieve Platinum , a municipality must provide justification in the form of web links to supporting publicly available material located on the municipal website for at least 90 percent of the certification claims .
Millvale stands out as a leading Sustainable Community by demonstrating its commitment to the performance program ’ s certification criteria in areas of both policy and practice . Its adherence to sustainability in operations , management and provision of public services is apparent through many actions including :
• A balanced taxation approach covering all sectors of borough services , open civic engagement , public participation and transparency in all areas of government .
• The borough utilizes Intergovernmental Cooperative Agreements ( ICA ) to engage in multi-municipal endeavors with neighboring communities , as well as continuing to adopt sustainability policies , goals and principles .
• The Gardens of Millvale is an active community production garden .
• The borough , along with its municipal neighbors , Sharpsburg and Etna , have created a working comprehensive plan .
• The borough along with the Millvale Community Development Corporation and Millvale Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee have worked together to create shared roadways and a “ Share the Road ” education campaign .
These are only a small sample of the many practices , operations and projects that have contributed to Millvale ’ s success . The
borough is continuously looking for ways to advance its sustainability practices .
The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification , administered by the Pennsylvania Municipal League in partnership with Sustainable Pittsburgh , is designed for municipalities that are working to save money , conserve resources and serve vibrant communities . Originally deployed in southwestern Pennsylvania by Sustainable Pittsburgh , the certification has gone statewide — recognizing small , medium and large municipalities across the Commonwealth . The Pennsylvania Municipal League and Sustainable Pittsburgh applaud municipalities for their demonstrated commitment and sustainability performance .
In earning the Platinum certification , Millvale is acknowledged as a leading example for progress in excelling to address such areas as community design and land use , energy efficiency , health and wellness , mitigating blight , intergovernmental cooperation , recycling and waste reduction , fiscal controls and internal management and operations . FIRST HOPE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO FUTURE ELECTRICIAN
Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry ( ACM ) has selected the recipient of the first-ever Hope Scholarship , Russell Paras . A 12th grade student , Russell will receive a $ 1,000 award for the 2017-18 academic year . He plans to enter CCAC ’ s five-year Associate of Science Apprenticeship Program to become a
