Yuretich has been a member of the Shaler Area Women ’ s Chorus , Chamber Chorus and Concert Choir through all three years at Shaler Area High School . Shaler Area Students Take Top Awards in Japanese Speech Contest
Shaler Area High School students took top awards in the annual High School Japanese Speech Contest held at the University of Pittsburgh .
The Japan American Society of Pennsylvania hosts the Japanese Speech Contest at Pitt ’ s Oakland Campus each year for Japanese learners of all levels . More than 100 students participate in the competition that includes four speech levels and a poster session .
Senior Evan Lysko won first place in the Advanced Plus category . In the Intermediate category , sophomore Kylie Dougherty won first place and senior Alexis Finney won second place .
Students were required to write a speech on the chosen topic for the speech contest or make a trifold poster for Poster session . The 19 Shaler Area students who participated in the competition wrote and memorized a five-minute speech in Japanese about what Japan will be like in 10 years . The students ’ speeches focused on everything from changes in Japanese culture to technological advancements to Japan ’ s changing position on international affairs .
Shaler Area Junior Accepted into All‐State Chorus
Emily Yuretich , a Shaler Area High School junior , is being recognized as one of the top vocalists in the state of Pennsylvania .
The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association ( PMEA ) named Yuretich as one of the top 36 Soprano II high school singers , which earned her a place in the All- State Chorus .
Yuretich ’ s journey to the state chorus began in November when she auditioned for the PMEA District Chorus and continued through February with her audition during Region Chorus .
Yuretich will rehearse and perform as a member of the PMEA All-State Chorus , under the direction of Dr . Mitos Anaya-Hart

Two Shaler Area Teachers Named PA Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalists
Shaler Area School District is proud to announce two high school teachers were named semi-finalists for the 2017 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year .
Greg Mason , science teacher , and Kristin Tepshich , choral teacher , were chosen by the selection committee of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National State Teachers of the Year , with the guidance and assistance of the Pennsylvania Department of Education , to advance to the semi-finalist round of the state Teacher of the Year selection process .
The Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year program celebrates excellence in teaching , honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the young people of Pennsylvania and selects a nominee for the National Teacher of the Year award .
Shaler Area Teacher Earns Fellowship in Harvard University Program
Shaler Area teacher Cari Kelm is one of less than 30 educators serving as fellows in the Pittsburgh cohort of Harvard Graduate School of Education ’ s Project Zero initiative Agency by Design .
Kelm , STEAM coordinator at Shaler Area , has been focusing on maker-centered learning since 2015 with the launch of Shaler Area ’ s K-3 STEAM programs Project ENGIN and Project Caboose . Kelm incorporates the core capacities , or thinking routines , developed through Project Zero ’ s Agency by Design into her classes with the goal of making the thinking process visible and once visible , able to be evaluated .
Supported by the Abundance Foundation , Agency by Design ( AbD ) is a multiyear research initiative at Project Zero investigating the promises , practices , and pedagogies of makercentered learning experiences .
In 2016 , Agency by Design began a second phase of work to explore how maker-centered learning can have broad-scale and long-term relevance in education by developing documentation
