FACTS ABOUT ON-STREET PARKING – BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Several times a year the Township receives inquiries regarding on-street parking . Most of these inquiries center around neighbors blocking access to private driveways . In most cases , our review of these complaints reveal that the on-street parking is legal and there is no parking violation . All roadways are public thoroughfares and residents are free to park if they abide by the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code requirements for parking . Below are some of the facts regarding legal parking on public streets .
PARKING IS PROHIBITED AS FOLLOWS :
• Within an intersection
• On a crosswalk
• Any place in which No Parking signs are erected
• In front of a public or private driveway ( on the same side of street as the driveway )
• Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant
• Within 30 feet of a traffic control sign , such as a stop sign
The above information is not inclusive of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code , but highlight the areas that pertain to local streets and driveway right of ways . Most often the complaints received by the Township are that a neighbor is parking directly across the street from the callers ’ driveway limiting their ability to access their driveway . This complaint is not in violation of any law , other than common neighborly manners .
The Shaler Township Police will respond to any call regarding a parking complaint but are limited in their ability to resolve the issue due to the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code . We encourage residents to speak to their neighbor regarding the situation and attempt to resolve the matter in a friendly manner . Sometimes the offending party does not realize that their parking habits are inconveniencing their neighbors and when asked will change their preferred parking spot .

Summer may seem far away but the Township has been working at Crawford Pool on many improvements . Some of these improvements will be very noticeable while others are to the pool infrastructure and will not be visible to pool patrons . These improvements are to protect the pool structure while providing residents with a first-class recreational facility to enjoy throughout the summer months . The following are a list of improvements that will be completed before the pool opens :
Pool Walls / Joints / Handicapped Steps -Due to the age of the pool , there are several areas of the walls and joints that have deteriorated resulting in water leaks and structural damage . We have contracted with a qualified vendor to make the necessary repairs . The Township included the installation of handicapped accessible steps that will be cut into the pool deck . The fiberglass steps that were in place in the four-foot side of the pool will be removed with this new addition .
Boiler – The current boiler at the pool is over 50 years old ( it is the original boiler installed for opening day on July 4 , 1964 ). Over the years , the Township has made the necessary repairs , however the boiler has reached the end of its ’ useful life . The original boiler was in the basement of the pump house and was accessed by very steep steps . Township crews built an addition to the pump house and a new boiler was installed in February . The boiler will now be level with the pool deck .

Water Slide - The water slide flumes will be reconditioned . The Township Board of Commissioner ’ s is considering replacement of the water slide in 2018 depending on design and installation costs .
Wading Pool – Throughout the summer of 2017 the Township will review the existing wading pool and evaluate the possibility of adding a small spray park feature in this area of the pool . Again , this feature will be evaluated based on costs .
We encourage residents to provide feedback for ongoing and future improvements to the pool . If you have any thoughts or suggestions , we encourage you to email the Township at shaler @ shaler . org . We look forward to seeing you at the pool this summer .
