Continuing a Legacy of Care

If you haven ’ t been to Three Rivers Dermatology in a while , a lot has changed . Owned and operated under the name of Dr . Ira Cohen for decades , the practice has transferred to the very capable hands of Damon McClain , M . D ., a mentee of Dr . Cohen . This has allowed Dr . Cohen to retire knowing that the practice he founded will continue with the same commitment to patient care and hospitality that he was known for .

After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and receiving his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine , Dr . McClain started his career as a physician at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with the U . S . Navy , where he was an officer for 12 years . Following his time in the Navy , Dr . McClain came back to Pittsburgh to pursue a civilian career in dermatology and soon heard of Dr . Cohen ’ s plans to retire .
“ Dr . Cohen is a longtime friend and mentor to me ,” Dr . McClain said . “ We worked alongside each other for a year , transitioning the practice before he retired last June , and it was clear the size of the shoes I had to fill . Here ’ s this established and respected figure , and we dedicated ourselves to continuing his philosophy of being family-centered , not rushing patients through the exam rooms , and caring for patients as people , not numbers .”
Upon taking over the practice , Dr . McClain updated it with the latest technology by digitizing all medical records , bringing in laser therapy for psoriasis treatments , and prepping the practice for more laser-based therapies in the near future .
He also brought in his wife , Susannah McClain , M . D ., who also graduated from Temple University School of Medicine . Both are board-certified dermatologists and have taught at various medical programs in their careers . The two work
independently , but also consult as a team for patients who have complicated skin issues . Remaining with the practice is longtime physician assistant Molly McIntyre , whom Dr . Cohen ’ s patients will readily recognize .
As for services offered , Three Rivers Dermatology welcomes patients of all ages for medical , surgical and cosmetic dermatological treatments . Staff members treat everything from the aforementioned psoriasis to skin cancer , as well as Botox / Xeomin treatments for wrinkles and chemical peels , all while fully explaining the intricacies of those procedures to the patients every step of the way to ensure their complete comfort and satisfaction .
“ We take the time to answer questions and address concerns ,” Dr . McClain said . “ We care about each of our patients as individuals … and while that was Dr . Cohen ’ s way of doing things , it ’ s always been our way of doing things as well .”
And regardless of the procedure or condition you have , Dr . McClain notes that everyone should be using an SPF 30 or greater sunscreen earlier in life , and sun-protective clothing for children .
“ Every tan is considered to be damage to your DNA , so not tanning or burning helps keep your skin healthier ,” he explains . It also helps prevent skin cancer and the formation of wrinkles as you age , so people end up looking younger later in life .
