“This year’s work showed
that complex solutions
are not always needed to
solve complex problems.”
Year-long Projects
Gateway Cities
Gateway Cities was a 10 month project
and the first of a four-year Regional
Ecology thematic focus at the Institute
without Boundaries (IwB).
This project looks at the layers of the
Toronto, New York City and Chicago
regional systems in terms of energy,
housing, transportation and public
spaces. It examines the networks
between these three cities, mapping the
connections from a regional perspective
and proposing an ecology of innovation
for these regional systems.
Project partners included public, notfor-profit and private organizations and
institutions in each of the three gateway
cities. This multi-partnership framework
allowed the IwB to thoroughly connect
and explore regional systems in and
between the chosen cities, provided the
IwB with access to vital research and
data about each region, and created
synergies between the three city
regions that could spark further regionwide projects.

Atlas One Delta
“The word atlas can tell a very generic
story about a place. What the
students decided to do, the way they
began to study the systems in order
to analyze the region and then to put
this together in a way that can be
used by anyone in the world as a tool
for analysis, completely blew us away.
It not only told the story of this megaregion of One Delta (regions of TCNY),
but also showed the deeper
underlying advantages of being in
these cities. The atlas presents the
strengths and weakness of these
cities as well as solutions for how we
can use what we have in the present
and move toward creating new
situations for living in the future.”
