Voice of Democracy Honors PTHS freshman Juliette Langley has earned honors in the Voice of Democracy essay contest through the McMurray VFW . She received 1st place honors in the Post 764 competition and went on to win first place in the District level competition ( Washington and Greene Counties ) as well . She now advances to the state level competition .
Title I Distinguished Schools McMurray Elementary and Pleasant Valley Elementary have been honored as Distinguished School by the Division of Federal Programs as two of the top performing Title I schools in Pennsylvania . These schools are among an elite list of 179 schools from across the state . Representatives from McMurray and Pleasant Valley were recognized at the 2017 Title I Improving Schools ’ Performance Conference in January .
Hour of Code at McMurray Elementary Students from Mr . Bayto ' s STEM Lab Hour of Code visited McMurray Elementary to teach 6th graders about programming with the NAO robots in Mrs . McCartney ’ s Computer Apps Class . Through some basic programming , they were able to make the robot sit , stand and wave . McCartney also had her students in all grades participating in the Hour of Code and other events to celebrate Computer Science Education . Fourth grade students were introduced to basic coding concepts on BrainPOP and Tynker . Fifth grade students reviewed basic coding concepts on Code . org , and created programs on Play Lab and Scratch . Sixth graders worked with Scratch to create animations and horizontal scrolling programs .
Skills USA Gold Medalist Congratulations to senior Doug Halo who captured the gold medal in Industrial Motor Controls at the Skills USA Regional Competition . The SkillsUSA Championships are competitive events showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation .
Students Share Writing Workshop at Conference Students Olivia Nix , Natalie Glover , Devon Milley , Alex Garcia , Carla Goldsmith , and Michael Barry joined Middle School teacher Renee Brown at The Capital Area Peer Tutoring Association conference at George Mason University in Virginia on November 11 . The students presented their journey from being peer tutors at the Middle School level and helping to creating the writing lab for Middle School . While at the conference , the students attended sessions throughout the day that they will use as they create the High School ’ s new Writing Lab under the direction of Mrs . Groninger .
McMurray Wins STEM Grant McMurray enrichment coordinator Anna Welleck has been selected as a winner of a $ 1,000 STEM Classroom grant from FirstEnergy . The funds will be used in various projects including the building of a prototype wind turbine .
Spanish Alumni Visit PTHS High School alumni came to visit before the winter break to say " Hola !" to current students in the AP Spanish course at PTHS . They answered questions about the AP exam later this year , taking Spanish at the collegiate level and shared how well PTHS had prepared them to continue studying the language .
PTHS Senior Wins Collision Repair Student of the Year Award PTHS senior Annie Michalski has been named the National I-Car Education Foundations Collision Repair Student of the Year and traveled to Las Vegas , Nevada to receive her honor at this year ' s SEMA Trade Show . Annie was one of many entries across the nation at both the High School and post-secondary School levels .

Colonial Day at Bower Hill Bower Hill 3rd graders finished their study on American History with a Colonial Day Celebration . Students rotated through stations where they made colonial tree ornaments , learned games children played in those times and even learn table manners children followed in that era .
PTHS Spanish Students Visit Pleasant Valley High School Spanish students visited Pleasant Valley to share books they had written and illustrated with the students . Mrs . Miller ' s classes read the books to Mrs . Packrone ' s class and helped as the younger Spanish students learned to create some of the origami used in the illustrations . The books were donated to Pleasant Valley for use in all of the building ' s Spanish lessons .
