WHAT ’ S NEWS IN PETERS TOWNSHIP
LOCAL GIRL SCOUT HONORED WITH HIGHEST AWARD
Girl Scouting ’ s highest awards — the Bronze , Silver and Gold Awards — are a girl ’ s chance to make a lasting difference in the world .
For Brenna Taylor from Peters Township , going gold means earning the highest achievement in Girl Scouting , the Gold Award .
This award , presented to Taylor by Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania , recognizes girls in grades nine through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable take-action projects that address important community needs .
Taylor is a senior at Peters Township High School and serves as co-president of the GSA and an officer of the fencing team . As a Girl Scout member for 12 years , Taylor is a Girl Scout Ambassador of Troop 51915 . She was supported in her Gold Award effort by the VFW . Her Gold Award project began in Feb . 2015 and was completed in Aug . 2016 .
Taylor ’ s final Gold Award project was a book of interviews she conducted of veterans from World War II , the Korean War and the Vietnam War . Realizing the importance of preserving their first-person stories , she was compelled to try to save them . For several of the men and women who volunteered , it was the first time they had told their stories . She is so grateful to all of the veterans who volunteered to be interviewed as well as her mentors and student volunteers . She has donated copies of her book to the Library of
Congress and Peters Township Public Library , as well as the Peters Township High School and the Peters Township Middle School .
Taylor plans to attend college to study pharmacy .
The Gold Award is a national award with national standards , and it represents a Girl Scout ’ s time , leadership , creativity and effort contributed to making her community better . Not only do Gold Award projects help communities , they also give girls important leadership skills , teaching them to seek out the work that needs doing in the world .
There are other benefits to going gold as well . Some universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award recipients , and girls who enlist in the U . S . Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements .
