Inaugural Norwin Invitational Quiz Tournament Draws 90 Student Competitors

Some 90 students from across the region competed at Norwin High

School ’ s first Invitational Quiz Tournament on Saturday , February 4 , 2017 . This was an eight-round quiz tournament following the National Academic Quiz Teams ( NAQT ) style of quiz bowl . The format is similar to team Jeopardy , with a toss-up question followed by three bonus questions that only the team who answered the toss-up correctly may attempt . Each match was comprised of two teams and 20 toss-up questions were read .
A small group of Norwin High School students — Andrew Halza , Hunter
Andrew Halza Stecko , Jared Ackerman , Erin Crust , and Matt Bushik — had been independently competing in Saturday quiz tournaments in NAQT format , and were performing quite well . Andrew proposed the idea that Norwin host a tournament to generate additional local interest in the event . He then proceeded to plan , coordinate , and execute the entire tournament . Assisting Andrew in the coordination were Norwin High School students Hunter Stecko , Jared Ackerman , Erin Crust , Matt Bushik , Robert Blake , and ReidAnn Sever . Norwin teachers Kevin Chitester and Ciminy St . Clair also helped Andrew organize the event . Norwin teachers Lori Anselmino , Katherine Kauffman-Roth , Jennifer Boyd , Julie Painter , Eric Bartels , along with substitute teacher Leah Iwinski , also helped run the event , serving as moderators and score-keepers .
Other participating schools included Washington , Bishop Canevin , Westmont Hilltop , Penn- Trafford , Winchester Thurston , Taylor Allderdice , Shady Side Academy , Penn Hills , Baldwin , and Franklin Regional .
Mr . Halza hopes that the tournament will continue even after he is no longer here to plan it . Results are posted on NAQT ’ s website , and well-performing teams have an opportunity to attend the national tournament .

Norwin High School Becomes Official Chapter of German National Honor Society
On October 3 , 2016 Norwin High School received the honor of becoming an official chapter of the German National Honor Society Delta Epsilon Phi . Delta Epsilon Phi ( ΔΕΦ ) National Honor Society for High School Students of German recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of learners of German . The German department is very happy that its application was accepted and that students can now be inducted into this prestigious organization . Norwin chapter ’ s name is Pennsylvania Zeta Zeta .
To be eligible for membership , students must have been learners of German for at least three years and continue to be enrolled in a class of German , must have a 3.6 grade point average in German and an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale , and must have been involved in cultural and outreach activities in regards to the German language .
Norwin High School is pleased that seven of its students were accepted into the German National Honor Society . On December 19 , 2016 their official induction into Delta Epsilon Phi took place at the High School with the students and their guests .
The sponsors of the Norwin Chapter , German Teachers Mr . Dave Jordan and Ms . Ulrike Sauer-Voigt , and High School Principal , Mr . Mike Choby , were also present . The students pledged in German intercultural awareness and understanding , and received their official membership certificate . At graduation , these students will be allowed to wear the German National Honor Society ’ s official graduation cords in the colors of the German flag : black , red , and gold .
With the first group of students successfully inducted , the German department is looking forward to many more years with an active chapter to recognize students for their accomplishments and to promote global awareness and cooperation .
