Despite her national accolades, Dr. Idema says she is most proud of her teaching, where she gets to train prospective medical students. That role stems from the fact that Dr. Idema was the first in her family to choose a medical career. “I get to mentor these students as they do their rotations and there’s no better feeling,” she explained. “Knowing that you are teaching the next generation of surgeons is something that I’m extremely proud of.” While currently still residing in Maryland, she’s no stranger to Pennsylvania and is moving back because it means being closer to family residing in the region. In her free time, Dr. Idema trains in the martial arts and spends as much time with her husband and children as possible. Dr. Idema is deeply committed to the Back to Life Campaign, which provides medical services to first responders and veterans. In her role there, she consults with patients who exhibit symptoms of chronic pain, and in many cases employs spinal cord stimulators, devices placed in the epidural space of the spinal cord providing stimulation directly to the dorsal column and changing how the brain perceives pain. “It changes the brain’s perception of the pain so that patients can get back to normal activities, and off of the chronic narcotics that many of them have been placed on,” Dr. Idema notes.
