Dr. Jocelyn Idema
E
veryone knows the plight of back pain and some suffer from
it chronically. Which is why it’s so important to find the right
doctor who is trained and excels in treating such a sensitive
area of the body.
That’s why Advanced Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation is adding
Dr. Jocelyn Idema to its team of surgeons starting January 1.
Dr. Idema hails from The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics
in Maryland, with a specialty in orthopaedic spine surgery using
minimally invasive techniques. She also specializes in motion
preservation techniques.
Patients suffering from neck and back pain, degenerative discs,
spinal stenosis, disc herniations and more will benefit from Dr.
Idema’s contributions to the practice.
In addition to her surgical skills, Dr. Idema has been nationally
recognized for her talents
and helps teach future
generations of doctors as an
adjunct instructor for the West
Virginia School of Osteopathic
Medicine. She’s been named
one of the “38 Female Spine
Surgeons to Know” under 40 in
the nation for two years in a row
by the Becker Spine Review, and is a member of the Ruth Jackson
Orthopaedic Society, which supports women in orthopaedics.
Despite her national accolades, Dr. Idema says she is most proud
of her teaching, where she gets to train prospective medical
students. That role stems from the fact that Dr. Idema was the first in
her family to choose a medical career.
“I get to mentor these students as they do their rotations and
there’s no better feeling,” she explained. “Knowing that you are
teaching the next generation of surgeons is something that I’m
extremely proud of.”
While currently still residing in Maryland, she’s no stranger to
Pennsylvania and is moving back because it means being closer to
family residing in the region.
In her free time, Dr. Idema trains in the martial arts and spends as
much time with her husband and children as possible. And while

those endeavors nourish the body and the family, it’s her volunteer
work that nourishes her soul.
Dr. Idema is deeply committed to the Back to Life Campaign, which
provides medical services to first responders and veterans. In her role
there, she consults with patients who exhibit symptoms of chronic pain,
and in many cases employs spinal cord stimulators, devices placed in
the epidural space of the spinal cord providing stimulation directly to
the dorsal column and changing how the brain perceives pain.
“It changes the brain’s perception of the pain so that patients can get
back to normal activities, and off of the chronic narcotics that many of
them have been placed on,” Dr. Idema notes.
