Full STEAM Ahead

sbury Elementary School students participated in a pilot
program, Full STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts, Math ) Ahead. This program was funded through
a grant by the VWR Charitable Foundation and coordinated
by the Millcreek Education Foundation and Asbury PTA. Full
STEAM Ahead was designed to engage fifth grade girls as future
engineers, scientists, mathematicians, architects, designers, and
computer programmers. Participants received hands-on learning
experiences and demonstrations from area female professors,
professionals, and leaders in STEAM fields. Students received
resource information to use after the program. All students that
completed the program were eligible to receive funds toward
attendance at a STEAM 2017 summer program.

J.S. Wilson, Walnut Creek and Westlake placed first, second, and

third in the Mathcounts team competition at Gannon University.
Millcreek had the top four individuals and six of the top ten.
Title One School
Mathcounts is a national middle school coaching and competitive
mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement
through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests.

Each year, the Division of Federal Programs honors the top
performing Title I schools in Pennsylvania. These schools are
defined as the highest 5% of Title I schools in Pennsylvania that
meet at least two of the following criteria:
• Math and Reading PSSA scores
• Annual Measureable Objectives (AMOs)
• Math and English Language Arts (ELA) Pennsylvania Value
Added Assessment System (PVAAS) data
• Attendance Rates
The Pennsylvania Department of Education selected 179
Title I schools to be named Distinguished Schools based on the
above criterion. Using this criterion, Belle Valley Elementary and
Grandview Elementary were selected to be a Title I Distinguished
School in the 2016-2017 School Year.
