Sarah Reed Senior Living ’ s Skilled Nursing Addition Nears Completion . Open House Coming Soon !
Unlike most senior living homes , Sarah Reed Senior Living has been around since long before the current residents can remember . Established in 1871 as the region ’ s first social service agency , Sarah Reed originally provided care for women and children in need of assistance . Nearly 150 years later , Sarah Reed Senior Living occupies an entire city block , and is a leader in senior housing and health care services . Today , it is a nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Community offering residential and personal care apartments , memory support , short-term rehab and skilled nursing care .
This spring , the facility will grow again as an expansion of the skilled nursing footprint wraps up construction and residents move in , treating them to a modern and well-equipped facility for today ’ s seniors in Erie . A renovation will then begin on the existing skilled nursing area , which was built in 1990 , back when skilled nursing looked a lot different than it does today .
“ At the time , shared rooms were standard , and nursing homes had an institutional feel ,” said Dina Scribner , Marketing Director for Sarah Reed Senior Living . “ But now people are requesting private rooms . Many of today ’ s seniors in skilled nursing homes are coming for short-term rehabilitation and therapies and are returning to their own homes . For the long-term residents , a more comfortable , residential design is desired .”
The addition offers 50 new , private rooms ( 25 to a floor ) and features openconcept living and dining rooms with serving kitchens , a larger and enhanced therapy suite , an outdoor courtyard , a new beauty shop , recreation room , and offices . Local architectural firm Weber Murphy Fox provided the design , and E . E . Austin & Son , General Contractors , have overseen the project .
Scribner said current residents are excited and looking forward to the move .
“ They ’ re excited about the privacy and more space . In addition to the private rooms , there will be fewer residents in each neighborhood , so the overall feel will be quieter and more home-like ,” she noted . The finishes and décor

in the addition and the renovation will be new . The end result will be a cohesive , updated nursing facility that houses the same number of residents in almost double the space ! That is something to look forward to for the residents , families and staff .
