Heritage Center celebrates women’s history The McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center celebrated Women’s History Month by focusing on female pilots of World War II, including McKeesport’s own Helen Richey. Writer and collector Denise Deems shared artifacts and stories with guests during a March 25 presentation at the center. Deems spoke about the history of female pilots and their role during the war. She shared many details about the life and experiences of Richey and the famous Amelia Earhart. “I’m fascinated by Helen Richey,” Deems said. “She’s mentioned in historical works, but not more than a footnote. It’s cool to come here, do more research and learn about this great woman from Pennsylvania. I want to share my knowledge of women’s history with the people of McKeesport and absorb all they can teach me about Helen Richey.” NAACP Pancake Breakfast The NAACP McKeesport Unit celebrated Black History Month with its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Common Ground Building on February 25. Members and guests enjoyed buttermilk, buckwheat and blueberry pancakes with a side of sausage and fresh fruit. Homemade baked goods also were sold. Proceeds benefited the local organization, which hosts community events and offers annual scholarships to graduating seniors. 38 McKeesport Area Community Events April 22 – Citywide Cleanup Event June 8 – Kennywood Day June 9 – Movie in the Park June 10 – Kids Fishing Derby June 15 – Good Neighbor Day June 17 – Greater Pittsburgh Soap Box Derby June 18 – Summer Concert June 25 – Go for the Goal Sprint Triathlon June 25 – Summer Concert July 2 – Summer Concert July 4 – Summer Concert & Fireworks July 9 – Summer Concert July 16 – Summer Concert July 23 – Summer Concert July 30 – Summer Concert August 6 – Summer Concert August 13 – Summer Concert August 14 – Village for Kids August 15, 16, 17 – International Village August 20 – Summer Concert August 27 – Summer Concert September 1, 2, 3, 4 – Rib Fest and Concerts September 10 – Patriotism Parade, Concert & Fireworks September 16 – Youth Tennis Clinic October 28 – Halloween Parade November 18 – Salute to Santa Parade December 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 – Festival of Trees
