Robotics Team Competes in FIRST Tech Challenge
Mars Robotics Team took ninth place in the Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge ( FTC ) Pittsburgh Area Qualifying Round , held Dec . 3 at Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy .
Team members are ninth-graders Aaron Echiburu , Matthew Gourash , Josh Wollerton and Adrian Zugehar ; eighth-grader Riley Mayer ; and seventhgrader Michael Rightley . This year ’ s challenge , the Velocity Vortex , asked teams to design , build , program and operate a robot to shoot a ball into a corner vortex or launch balls into a center vortex .
The qualifying competition , the team ’ s first , brought together 16 teams from Maryland , New York , Ohio and Pennsylvania . For details , visit marsfirstrobotics . org .
Engineering Students Compete in Annual Contest
A team of Mars Area High School Engineering by Design students competed in The Chain Reaction Contraption Contest , held Dec . 9 at Carnegie Science Center . This year ’ s contest asked students to create a Rube Goldberg-type device to accomplish the task of unlocking / locking something using various STEM ( Science Technology Engin-eering & Mathematics ) concepts ; a centralized theme ; and in 20 or more steps .
The team of juniors Sam Gentile , Dylan Seebacher , Patrick Roach and Gunnar Watson was selected from among four Mars Area teams to represent the school at the event . The team ’ s device , themed “ America ,” completed its task in 22 steps .
The annual contest is sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Company , and presented in cooperation with the Carnegie Science Center and the Engineers ’ Society of Western Pennsylvania . For more information , visit chainreactioncontest . org .
