Hockey Players Selected for

ALL-STAR TEAMS

Two members of Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team were selected to compete in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League ( PIHL ) All-Star Class AA Game at 3 p . m . on Sunday , Jan . 29 , at Alpha Ice Complex in Harmarville , PA . Senior Keaton Hanna ( assistant captain ), 18 , son of Raymond and Cherlyn Hanna of Mars , joined the All-Star Class AA Gold Team . Hanna is currently tied for 14th place amongst PIHL Class AA leaders with 25 points ( 11 goals and 14 assists ).
Senior Noah Raymundo ( team captain ), 17 , son of Raul and Joanne Raymundo of Valencia , competed as a member of the All-Star Class AA Black Team . Raymundo is tied for 20th place on the PIHL Class AA leaderboard with 22 points ( 10 goals and 12 assists ).

Seventh-Grader Wins Annual School Geography Bee cKeesport AREA

Mars Area seventh-grader Christopher Dvorak took first place in the 2017 Mars Area Geography Bee Final Round Qualifier , held Feb . 1 at Mars Area Centennial School .
Eighth-grader Alex Tiller took second . Other participants included eighth-graders Riya Cherlakola , Eleanor Howell , Mia Ola , Elizabeth Roda , Thomas Spreng and Genevieve Thomas ; seventh-grader Zachary Hixon ; and sixth-graders Evan Peaco and Cole Winstead .
Dvorak will now complete a written exam that will be mailed to the Pennsylvania State Geography Bee , which will notify him as to whether he has qualified for the state contest on Friday , March 31 . The state winner will then advance to the National Geography Bee competition , to be held Monday through Wednesday , May 15 through 17 , in Washington , D . C . The National Geographic Society sponsors the contest .
Prior to the final round qualifier , all students at Mars Area Middle School and Mars Area Centennial School completed a 50-question , written geography exam based on the physical and cultural geography of both the United States and the world during their social studies classes .
The top 50 students who missed no more than eight questions then took a second-round exam in January . And , those students who missed no more than eight questions advanced to the final round on Feb . 1 .

Student Works Selected for Scholastic Art Exhibit

Several works by Mars Area High School students were accepted to the 2017 Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art & Writing Awards held Feb . 4 through 19 at La Roche College .
Students include seniors Sydney Edwards , Meghan Pisarcik , Emily Roush , Claire Staresinic and Adia Taimuty-Loomis ; junior Samantha Ridgeway ; and sophomore Emma Voelker .
The exhibit featured hundreds of artworks by high school students from throughout the Pittsburgh region . Winners were awarded a Gold Key , Silver Key or an Honorable Mention . Gold Key winners ’ works advanced to the 2017 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in New York , NY .
All winners were recognized at an awards ceremony at 2 p . m . on Sunday , Feb . 19 , at La Roche College ’ s Kerr Sports & Fitness Center .
