Hampton High School Named 2016 National Blue Ribbon School
A school-wide celebration was held on Monday , Nov . 21 , 2016 in observance of the High School being named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School . This is the second time the high school has been named a Blue Ribbon School . The first award was granted in 1998 .
A formal presentation was held for guests in the auditorium , featuring members of the faculty and administration who were key to the school receiving both Blue Ribbon awards .
Guests also experienced a visit from Pittsburgh Pirates Head Coach and motivational speaker Clint Hurdle .
Following the formal presentation , guests were invited to view student projects and sample work from every department in the school , featured in the main lobby area .
History of the Blue Ribbon Award : The National Blue Ribbon program has been in existence since 1982 . In the 34 years since it started , the program has bestowed the coveted award on fewer than 8,500 schools . Only 420 schools nationwide can even be nominated each year . Rigorous criteria for public and private schools have been instituted as part of the qualification and review process . The designation encompasses high-performing schools and schools that are demonstrating they are closing the achievement gap . Schools meeting the criteria can only be nominated once every five years for the award . It is extremely difficult at the high school level to receive the designation . Of the 1,500 public and private Pennsylvania high schools , only 20 have been recognized in the entire history of the Blue Ribbon Award , with 12 of those in Western Pennsylvania . Only three Pennsylvania high schools – including Hampton – have received the designation more than once .
