STEEL CENTER for Career and Technical Education : Advertising and Design

What is Advertising and Design ?
The Advertising and Design instructional program in the applied visual arts prepares individuals to use artistic techniques to effectively communicate ideas and information to business and consumer audiences via illustrations and other forms of printed media . This program includes instruction in concept design , layout , paste-up and techniques such as engraving , etching , silkscreen , lithography , offset , drawing and cartooning , painting , collage and computer graphics . These skills are all applicable to industry standards .
The program at Steel Center for Career and Technical Education is even more precise . Advertising and Design is half Graphic Design and half Print Production . Students learn how to create creative designs through lessons in color theory , typography , composition , digital photography and elements and principles of design . They learn how to use industry standard software Adobe Photoshop , Adobe Illustrator , and Adobe InDesign and have the opportunity to earn industry certifications .
Scott Kane who is the lead teacher of this program stated , “ I like to think of this half of the class as a College Prep class for student who want to pursue a career as a Graphic Designer . Not only do they get a head start on learning curriculum they will learn in college , but they can earn college credits through the soar program .”
The second half of the class is Print Production . Students who do not want to attend college can pursue a career in offset printing or digital printing . The Advertising and Design classroom has a state-of-the-art digital press , vinyl printer and many pieces of finishing equipment . Students will learn graphic design , but can focus on the production aspect and find a rewarding career when they graduate from Steel Center for Career and Technical Education . Accomplishments

This is Scott Kane ’ s second year of teaching the Advertising and Design Class . In a short time , the students have created some awesome pieces for Steel Center for Career and Technical Education . A group of second and third year students have been working as a “ production team ” in which they still participate in lessons , but will focus on completing real life projects for Steel Center for Career and Technical Education . The students designed countless posters and other promotional materials for events and classes at Steel Center for Career and Technical Education . They are producing products that would be produced in a number of public relations and advertising firms . This is hands on , real life experience for these students . It is a goal to continue to build this team , so we have students who can work on projects for schools and community members , to become a resource for the community , but more importantly to give the students real projects they can use for their portfolios . rentwood Borough
