Wright continues his daily runs , coaches throughout the track and field season and also organizes a yearly marathon , which began right after 9 / 11 .
“ The year after that tragic event I wanted to organize a run honoring our soldiers fighting overseas ,” explains Wright . “ I started the Red , White and Blue Marathon with my coaching partner at Baldwin , “ Bunny ” Schmidt . It ’ s a 5k , cross-country , high school invitational that takes place the weekend after Labor Day in Schenley Park . There are about 2,000 runners from more than 70 different high schools who
participate each year . It ’ s a terrific event and a great way for the kids to get a good race under their belt before track and field season begins .”
In December 2017 , Wright will have run 10,000 consecutive days . “ I ’ ll probably do a little something to celebrate that milestone ,” he says . “ And I figure , if I can make it to the 30-year mark , I ’ ll be proud of that accomplishment , too . But if I don ’ t make it that far , or my running streak comes to an end , because it will someday , I know for sure life will go on .” n
