And you ’ re hurting no one ! Especially if you ’ re masturbating by yourself – you ’ re hurting no one , you ’ re just making yourself happy . So how can that be something bad ? I don ’ t understand .”
Lo says she first heard a ‘ Lady Wood ’ reference on some hip TV series – a female character demanding sexual satisfaction said something like , ‘ Hey – I ’ m losing wood over here !’ She toyed with different ways to phrase it , and – thinking ‘ girl wood ’ sounded too awkward – went with the current wording , first dedicating a tune to the idea , then an entire album banner . “ So instead of saying , ‘ I ’ m a chick with balls ,’ I ’ m saying , ‘ I ’ ve got lady wood ’ – I thought it was the best album title ,” she says .
Lo also applauds fellow singer Alicia Keys for choosing to appear without makeup – an honesty-based movement whose time has definitely come . Like Naomi Wolff ’ s classic treatise The Beauty Myth , it addresses our conventional views of beauty , and the continued existence of an unusually-vast cosmetic industry itself . What if all women , everywhere , simply stopped applying makeup on one particular day ? 17 aisles at Target would shut down alone , plus an entire floor at Macy ’ s . Lo isn ’ t sure if she ’ s ready to say goodbye to that whole industry . She never thought much about her looks when she was a behind-the-scenes composer with Wolf Cousins , which is still her publisher , through Warner Chapell Music
Scandinavia .
“ But makeup became part of my life when I started doing this ,” the vocalist cedes . “ Since I became an artist , I ’ ve become way more aware , because people are always looking at you . But honestly , I ’ m comfortable with both – I can love to dress up and get my face done , or I can also just roll up in no makeup and whatever I want to wear and be like , ‘ This is me today .’ Again , it ’ s every woman ’ s choice . But I love that Alicia Keys is doing that , though . She ’ s fully refusing , and I feel like a lot more artists are using social media now to go without makeup and show their true selves . Beauty is so subjective , and I think it should stay that way .”
What wisdom does Lo want to impart to young female fans ? Again , she ’ s prochoice . “ I want them to choose whether or not they want to learn something from me at all ,” she concludes . “ Because I ’ m not here to teach them about anything – I ’ m just here to share my own emotions . But I would say , if anything , I ’ d tell them , ‘ Just be who you are , flaws and all – you don ’ t have to apologize , you don ’ t have to make excuses for yourself .’ I think a lot of girls make excuses , and are overly hard on themselves .
“ But it ’ s like , ‘ Hey , come on – you ’ re you . And that ’ s just fine !”
