Ichthus Newsletter Winter 2015

Welcome to your Ichthus Newsletter Quarterly Newsletter from the Leaders of Worship and Preachers Trust I mentioned in my last foreword, the importance of anniversaries and birthdays. Well, we certainly celebrated the 10th birthday of LWPT in style! LWPT trustees past and present gathered at the LWPHomes Westerley Care Home in Minehead on Saturday 26th September. It was good to see so many who are active in LWPT now or who have served faithfully in the past. We enjoyed the very appropriately titled ‘Concert of Hope’ led by the excellent Occasional Singers in a marquee on the beautiful main lawn. Our staff at Westerley, led by Stevie Shaw our Home Manager, worked hard alongside trustee David Greet to provide a truly memorable occasion, with good food too! We thank God for ten years of LWPT, in which we have taken on the work passed to us by LPMA and expanded into new areas. We thank God too for the work of LWPHomes, which has ‘taken the baton’ handed on by Mutual Aid Homes as we care lovingly for our four ‘Westerleys’, our committed staff and (most importantly) our family of residents. Our birthday celebration was followed on Sunday 27th September by another key event in Minehead. The Revd John Bolton, a trustee of LWPT, was commissioned as our ninth National Advocate at a special service at St Michael’s Anglican Church. St Michael’s is the church where John was appointed curate as he began his ministry 30 years ago. The service was tremendous, with the West Somerset Brass Band complementing the wellplayed pipe organ with singing that could probably be heard across the Bristol Channel! After the service, all returned to Westerley for an excellent tea and the playing of the Darktown Struthers Jazz Band. I was blessed in taking the service at Watchet Methodist Church to a rather larger congregation than I usually have locally! Visitors to Westerley Woodhall Spa can see something of the history of LPMA. Two plaques that mark the beginning of LPMA in 1849 and its 150th Anniversary in 1999, were built into the walls of Wensley Methodist Church in the Derbyshire Peak District. We removed them after this small country chapel closed; they now form part of the outside wall at Westerley Woodhall Spa for all to see as a reminder of our great history. I am fortunate to visit Westerley Woodhall Spa often, in connection with our ongoing building project to convert spare space on the second floor into four first class rooms, each with an en-suite facility. We had a great time too at the anniversary for Westerley Grange-over-Sands on Friday 21st August. Westerley at Westcliff-on-Sea hopes to have its anniversary event in 2016; watch this space for details! Please continue to pray for all parts of our work at LWPT and LWPHomes. Our trustees, our staff and the many people who benefit from what we offer at LWPT and LWPHomes all need your prayers. Please pray too for all the residents in our Westerleys who form our extended family. We need your prayers as we continue with our work of support and care to many people in times of uncertainty.
