ICA Update Campus Ministry Senior Service Day A Senior Service Day took place at the Ploughshares Nursery, an organization affiliated with the Alameda Point Collaborative. In preparation for the day, seniors learned about the APC’s mission to end the cycle of homelessness, which includes offering job training and work experience—as well as a home—to the people they serve. Students spend a morning completing tasks at the Ploughshares Nursery, including refurbishing gardens and cleaning out weeds. 60 seniors from ICA gave up a Tuesday sitting in classes to help an organization that serves others. Our class was split into groups to complete multiple tasks to help the organization. I was the leader of a group that was given the opportunity to clean up a memorial of a child that had passed away. Three years ago, a mother lost her son to a drowning accident. The friends and families in the community decided to plant a garden in his memory. With careful hands and a full heart, my team and I made sure that this memorial was as beautiful as the spirit of the young boy. The experience was extremely rewarding, and it reminded us that even by contributing in seemingly small ways, we are still able to make a world of difference. —Juvilyn, ‘16 Thanksgiving Food Collection In November, we participated in a holiday food drive for the SF Marin Food Bank, which supports more than 30,000 households in the community. Our drive lasted three weeks, in which we accepted canned goods and dry foods. Through student generosity, we were able to donate 520 pounds of food, enough for 433 meals. During our food drive, we were educated about the constant fight against hunger that many people face everyday. Just in San Francisco and Marin alone, one in four people are at risk for hunger. § Coach Sideco and her volleyball players volunteered at the SF Food Bank.
