One of the most crucial lessons to learn during transformation is thinking outside the box when it comes to nutrition. What I have found in my 4 years post transformation is that just about any recipe can be altered to make a dish healthy and nutritious. What I have also found in my passion of training others is that while I do provide a meal plan/guide to clients, laying out every meal of every day is doing my clients more of a disservice than actually helping them. Those clients who have the most success are those who take what I provide to them and not only get creative with their approved foods but learn how to read nutritional labels and combine foods that they enjoy. With that said, a staple, approved food for not only my clients but for myself is a quality protein powder. It’s a big part of my every day nutrition and I couldn’t picture a proper recovery without it. In the beginning, I would use protein powder only in shakes or smoothies. Over the past few years, I’ve learned new ways to incorporate protein powder in my diet that do not involve a blender bottle. What I discovered is that baking with protein powder is so enjoyable. I have made brownies, cookies, muffins, oatmeal, pancakes, even sweet potato protein soup. After many failed attempts and some successes, I have found several recipes that I really enjoy. And better yet, that my entire family (yes, even my kids) enjoy! Depending on the type of workout and your body weight, a “post-workout meal” should contain at least 20-30 grams of protein for proper muscle recovery, plus possible carbohydrates to replenish glycogen. Knowing this, a shake that combines protein powder with many other optional ingredients is an easy choice. But we all know too well that a protein shake can get boring and from my experience boredom is one thing that will tempt people into falling off their nutrition. It’s important to change things up, find new combinations that you like in order to keep your nutrition on point. So here are some recipes that use protein powders to deliver both the protein and carbohydrates your body needs to repair your muscles and keep you energized.
