HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL
Rolls-Royce Engineering Workshop
Students at Heritage High School were given hands-on
Engineering lessons with the experts during workshops
with Rolls-Royce graduates.
Three graduates from Rolls-Royce ran the event at
Heritage High School for 30 Year 9 students.
During the workshops, students were asked to use their
engineering know-how to design and build a small glider
and a competition was held to see which one flew the
furthest.
Mrs Oley-Jones, Alternative Curriculum & Achievement
Co-ordinator at Heritage High School, said everyone had
thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. She said, “It’s really an
introduction to engineering and what it’s all about. It also
creates links between the school and industry, and makes
students think about the possibilities of apprenticeships.
It’s also about getting girls involved as well as the boys.
There’s a wide range of careers in engineering and it’s
about raising aspirations, putting it into context and
bringing it to life.”
Tom Hilton, one of the graduate engineers from RollsRoyce who ran the workshops explained the workshop
was all about opening student’s eyes to STEM subjects
He said: “It’s all about promoting Science Technology
Maths and Engineering and the jobs that are available
in these areas. They were a really enthusiastic group and
did really well.”
We are currently arranging for Rolls Royce to come
back to Heritage to run the workshops with our Year 8
students.
Accelerated Reader
It has been a fantastic year for reading at Heritage High
School so far with over 1400 book quizzes being passed
by students. We are well on our way to beating last year’s
total of 1857. Students across all houses have achieved
special awards for excellence in reading.
Silver awards, which recognise passing 50 or more
quizzes have been achieved by Shannon Palmer from
Tolkien and Nathan Moor from Redgrave and Ellie Hill,
Jordan Dickson and Harvey Spencer have all become
part of the Million words club, for passing quizzes on
books that total over a million words, and the 100 Points
club, for earning over 100 points on Accelerated Reader
quizzes.
These are all fantastic achievements and we would like
to congratulate all students who have earned awards
so far this year. A number of students are a very small
number of quizzes away from getting the bronze, silver
or gold award so we hope to add more students to this
list before the end of the year. For the first time in three
years Tolkien House has fallen from the top spot in the
Accelerated Reader house competition. We might need to
buy some orange ribbons for the trophy in July because
MacArthur have taken the lead. Tolkien, Redgrave and
Westwood are all still in the running though so keep
reading and passing quizzes to add towards your House’s
total. We now have over 3,000 different titles to read and
test on so there is something to suit everyone.
I would also like to say goodbye, good luck and huge
thank you to two library assistants who will be leaving
at the end of Year 11 this year. Jessica Ince and Jac
Wilkinson have both been indispensable in the Hive.
They have both worked in the library since starting in
Year 7 and have been reliable, trustworthy and efficient.
Jessica even managed to get down to the final 7 of the
Young Librarian of the Year
Awards last year for her
commitment and dedication
to the library. You will both
be a huge loss to the Heritage
library team but I know
you will both be going on to
fantastic things.
BE YOUR BEST
