YOUR SUPPORT MAKES THIS POSSIBLE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
Leidy’s Story…
Making the transition from high school to college can be a very scary and
stressful time in a teenager’s life and even more challenging as a potential first
generation college student. Thankfully, HEB ISD has programs like TRiO to help
guide students like Leidy Guarin. TRiO is a grant program funded by the
Department of Education and locally sponsored by the University of North
Texas. The program works with low-income, potential first-generation students
to further their education.
“By being in the TRiO program, I have had a lot of opportunities and resources
that other students don’t have. I received fee waivers for SATs and college
applications, something that helped my single mother and me so much,” Leidy
says. “I also had the opportunity to tour universities and find the perfect one
for me.”
The HEB ISD Education Foundation provided a grant in 2013 during government
sequestration so the TRiO program could continue to take HEB ISD students to
visit colleges. This fall, the HEB ISD Education Foundation will provide a grant
to the TRiO program so that every 9th grade participant can take the PSAT free
of charge. This grant will give potential first-generation college students like
Leidy additional experience preparing for college entrance exams as well as
access to additional College Board study materials.
This spring, Leidy graduated from the University of North Texas and was a
part of the Emerald Eagle Scholarship Program.
“I believe that the TRiO program is an amazing program and hope that it can
continue to grow and help students like me that need the motivation and
financial support to continue their education.”
There is no greater investment to be made in our community than in
our teachers and students. Your early commitment will allow us to
move quickly forward on our big plans for the year ahead.
