HEB ISD Education Foundation Grant in Action The HEB ISD Education Foundation works hard to raise and award private funds and community resources to support the HEB ISD’s commitment to excellence in education. To date, the Foundation has raised and awarded more than $643,850 to our deserving HEB ISD classrooms and campuses, funding a diverse array of needs identified by our educators. Past grant winners include innovative initiatives like 3-D printers and dremeling tools, the HEB Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy, and programs to prevent suicides and bullying, build life-long music learning and foster engaged readers. One particular grant provided an opportunity for Spanish Immersion students to interact with bilingual students across campuses, enhancing their learning experience. The grant titled , “Making Connections with Spanish Stories,” provided Spanish Immersion students from Meadow Creek and Bedford Heights elementary schools the opportunity to collaborate as they applied their writing and Spanish skills to create an authentic product. The students practiced their oral and written Spanish skills when working together to create their own books, and when delivering and presenting the completed books to other bilingual students. “The greatest impact the grant had was in encouraging the fluency of Spanish. The Spanish Immersion students were able to talk to students from another Spanish Immersion campus and to native speakers in the bilingual program at Shady Oaks.” –Doreen Mengwasser, Principal – Meadow Creek Elementary Please join our work to support the HEB ISD’s commitment to excellence in education. www.hebisd.edu/community/edfoundation.asp 9
