Hawthorne School Parent-Student Handbook 2016-2017 GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE Guidance and Discipline will:  Be positive;  Be appropriate, considering the age and developmental needs of the child; and  Lead to the child‘s ability to develop and maintain self-control. The consequences imposed for disciplinary actions are not exhaustive and are imposed at the discretion of the administration. The following consequences will be imposed as determined by the teacher or the Principal: 1. A verbal warning. Child spoken to by appropriate staff member. 2. Removal in or revoking students‘ privileges in activities (may include, but not be limited to: recess, field day, parties, etc.). This will differ based on students‘ age and the level of the infraction. 3. Conduct Report * sent home: Parent-Teacher Communication. 4. Meeting with the Principal and/or teacher, parent and child. 5. In-school suspension. 6. Suspension from school. Incidents, for which suspension from school may be imposed, include but are not limited to the following: Possession of drugs / alcohol, possession of dangerous weapons, fighting / physical assault, disruptive behavior, which includes verbal assault and bullying, vandalism, and leaving the school without permission. BUS OFFENSES If there is a bus offense, the child may lose bus privileges as per Board of Education policy. Bus offenses include, but are not limited to, the following:                Failure to remain seated/moving around the bus it is in motion Refusing to wear a seatbelt Throwing object(s) out of the bus window Sticking head or hands out of the window Yelling or unacceptable language/gestures on the bus or out the bus window Destruction of property Disobedient, rude, discourteous, or annoying behavior Disturbing others Unusual loud talking or undue noise Eating, drinking, littering Fighting, pushing, tripping Spitting Smoking Violation of safety procedures Possession of drugs, alcohol or a weapon 37
