RESOURCE PROGRAMS
Children may spend up to one-half the instructional day in a resource program receiving specialized instruction in a small group setting .
ADDITIONAL HELP
Eligible Hawthorne students may also get extra out-of-classroom , small group instruction in reading , math , or both . Instruction in English as a Second Language is also available .
GIFTED AND TALENTED
The Teaneck Academically Gifted Program ( TAG ) will provide an enriching , rigorous , varied and continuous curriculum with differentiated learning opportunities for all students based on their multiple intelligences . At the elementary level , the goal of TAG is to nurture students to find their giftedness . All students will be introduced to the Junior Great Books program to explore higher-level thinking and will receive math enrichment in their classrooms with support from the TAG teachers . In fourth grade , TAG students will participate in multidisciplinary seminars , lead by the TAG teacher . In the fall , all fourth grade students will take a cognitive abilities test . The results of the cognitive abilities test , along with the NJ ASK results , teacher and parent recommendations , and portfolio assessments will identify students for participation in the middle school TAG program . TEACHER QUALIFICATION NOTICE
As a parent of a student at Hawthorne , you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child . Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child ’ s classroom teachers . Specifically , you have the right to ask for the following information :
Whether the New Jersey State Department of Education has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches .
Whether the New Jersey State Department of Education has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances .
� The teacher ‘ s college major ; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and , if so , the subject of the degree ( s ).
Whether any teachers ‘ aides or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child and , if they do , their qualifications .
