Hawthorne School Parent-Student Handbook 2016-2017
CLASS TRIPS
Most trips require payment from parents. No child will be allowed on a class trip without a
signed permission slip. On the day of the trip, parents will not be called to give verbal
permission.
Participation in class trips is contingent upon the exhibition of appropriate behavior prior to
and during the trip.
CHAPERONES
Board policy requires one chaperone for every six students, in addition to the teacher in
charge.
Teachers will select qualified adult chaperones to participate in the field trip and, upon
selection, provide each chaperone with a copy of the Chaperone Guidelines.
Chaperones will be assigned a specific group of students and will be accountable for
those students‘ welfare during the trip. Prior to arrival at the trip‘s destination, the
teacher in charge shall instruct the chaperones to inform the students in their charge of
the conduct expected, the time and place of departure, and any other information
necessary, such as mealtimes. Chaperones will be expected to attempt to regulate
student conduct. However, the teachers will be ultimately responsible for ensuring
proper student conduct.
Students are expected to return to school on the day of a field trip unless emergency or
extenuating circumstances are present and the Principal has approved the child‘s leave.
In such an instance, a parent/guardian signature must be obtained.
Chaperones are expected to complete the Volunteer Indeminification Statement and the
Volunteer Alcohol/Drug-Free Statement to remain on file in the Main Office.
Every adult on a trip will be considered staff or a chaperone.
As per Board policy, a list of all chaperones on the given field trip will be provided to
the Principal and kept on file in the main office. This list will include the name,
address, telephone/mobile number of the chaperone.
Siblings are not allowed on trips.
CELL PHONE POLICY FOR STUDENTS
I understand that my child may carry a cell phone for safety reasons as they travel to and from
school. Once they are on school grounds, the cell phone must be turned off and kept out of
sight during regular school hours (including field trips). Students who violate this policy will
have the item taken away by a faculty member, to be returned at the end of the school day. If
emergencies arise during the school day, I will be contacted by the school.Likewise, if I need
to contact the school in the event of an emergency during school hours, I will call the school‘s
main line at (201) 833-5540.
Any violation of this policy will result in the confiscation of the device. I also understand that
I may have to retrieve the cell phone from the school office if the phone is taken out by my
child at an inappropriate time. Continued disregard of the policy may result in my child losing
the privilege to carry a cell phone to school.
