Town of Waxhaw Collaborated with the Museum of the Waxhaws to Honor Black History Month in Waxhaw

In honor of Black History Month , The Town of Waxhaw partnered with the Museum of the Waxhaws to celebrate and acknowledge the history and achievements of African American educators , artists , performers , and soldiers .
On February 18 , 2017 , the Museum of the Waxhaws partnered with the Town and the National Center for Jewish Film and the Historic Preservation Commission to sponsor a special showing of Rosenwald , a film by Aviva Kempner . Rosenwald is documentary film which was supported by the National Historic Trust that relates the story of two men whose vision and philantropic contributions helped to improve education prospects for more than one third of the black children across the South . Philanthropist and CEO of Sears and Roebuck Julius Rosenwald , and Booker T . Washington of the Tuskegee Institute , worked together to plan and construct state-of-the-art schools for Black American children from Pennsylvania to Texas . Between 1917 and 1932 3,537 schools , teaching shops and teacher homes were constructed . Today only 10 % to 12 % remain .
The Town opened the event to the public for free . There were two showings of the film on the 18th before it was returned to the lender .
Local historian Jack Clay had black history artifacts on display from his military collection . As always , Jack offered the public a lot of knowledge and insight about history .

Black Female Music Legends Exhibit at the Museum of the Waxhaws

On February 18th , the Black Female Legends exhibit opened to the public at the Museum of the Waxhaws . Dresses from music legends like Gladys Knight , Mary Wells , Tina Turner , Little Eva , Etta James and more are on display until March 4th . David Cook , Executive President of the American Music Guild loaned the dresses to the museum and was on hand for opening day as docent . Cook , who is an Oscar and Grammy recipient , is passionate about bringing arts to the community . He established the AMG to aid in the understanding , appreciation and to advance the contributions of the arts to American culture .

Parks & Rec Relocated to Town Hall Annex Building

The Town of Waxhaw recently renovated the old Town Hall building to make room for the Parks and Recreation Department . The new building , now referred to as “ Town Hall Annex ” is located at 317 North Broome Street . Stop by and say hello and see the “ rustic and refined ” space .
