Back by popular demand , the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Alzheimer ’ s Association presents these free monthly workshops , which provide education and support for caregivers , family members , and all those interested in learning more about dementia . There will be time for reflection and discussion on the topics presented .
Monday , November 14 , 2016 | Basics of Alzheimer ’ s Disease and related Dementia
The presentation will begin with a brief history of how Alzheimer ’ s disease ( AD ) was discovered . We will cover brain and typical age-related changes versus problematic changes that indicate the need for physician follow up . Dementia and the stages and symptoms of Alzheimer ’ s disease will also be defined and discussed , including current research .
Monday , December 12 , 2016 | Communication Changes Associated with Dementia
This week we will examine changes in the brain associated with AD and related dementia . The importance of communication , how communication changes , and strategies on how to engage in better communication will be covered . Alzheimer ’ s disease statistics will be presented .
Monday , February 13 , 2017 | Understanding Behavior Associated with Alzheimer ’ s Disease
We will discuss common behavioral symptoms associated with Alzheimer ’ s disease and related dementia . Learn how to process , evaluate and interpret behavior , including how to better understand and respond to behavior . Medications are also discussed .
Monday , March 13 , 2017 | Activities for Individuals with Alzheimer ’ s Disease
Presentation will discuss the goal of activities , appropriate types of activities ( physical , psychosocial , cognitive , spiritual , creative ), planning activities ( the person , the approach and the environment ) and evaluating the success of activities .
