As a long time subscriber to Gulf Coast Fisherman it is always
a pleasure to return to Port Lavaca. For the last several years now
my wife and I make the trip from Albuquerque, NM back to Auburn,
AL for football season. The trip includes a stop in Port Lavaca to
visit and fish with my brother Ron and family. Like football, fishing
in Texas has its good and bad days.
This trip turned out to be one of, if not, the best trip yet. We
fished in Lavaca Bay in the morning around the shell reefs near
Alcoa and the HW-35 bridge. In the afternoon we moved down to
the southern end of the bay and fished around an oil rig which
turned out to be a great move. We limited out on keeper specks and
I managed to land this 28 pound red prior to running out of shrimp
and having to leave the rig because of increasing afternoon winds.
Sheep heads, hard heads, skip jacks, and a variety of small sharks
made for an interesting day.
After taking pictures of the red we released it back into the
bay. Always enjoy reading your magazine and looking forward to
another stop in Port Lavaca on the return trip in Dec. Maybe I can
catch the red again.
