early on a bull followed mine to boatside
where it made a rather rowdy but slightly
errant pass at it just as I was about to lift
it from the water for another cast. Talk
about getting a guy’s attention! The
disappointment of missing the fish,
however, was short-lived, as an hour or
so later another one struck – this time a
bit more accurately. After the ensuing
confrontation, we were able to get it
aboard for some quick pictures with
Weeks Island in the background and a
safe release. A crude estimate of its length
was 40 inches.
Three months later, again in the
Rockefeller Refuge but a different canal
from the one that gave up Durel’s fish, I
got another. While working the righthand corner of the canal, I noticed a nicesized red make an attack on some small
mullet in the left-hand corner. So I
crossed the canal, gently set the anchor
within casting range of where the fish had
struck, and then made my offering – this
time with a fly.
I recall almost immediately hooking
and then losing what seemed to be a
“regular red”, but not long thereafter the
big one struck. It was quickly weighed
