Travis picking is uniquely suited to acoustic
steel string guitars and is often utilized by
those who specialize in a number of acousticheavy styles. Chet Atkins and James Taylor
are two renowned guitarists that popularized
Travis picking.
In its simplest form, Travis picking allows
you to break chords up into bass notes and
higher intervals, where your thumb is largely
responsible for the bass notes and your
other fingers grab the higher ones, all while
rocking back and forth between the two.
In this series, instructor Caren Armstrong
takes us through the basics of Travis picking.
She’ll provide you with a firm understanding
of the technique, while covering picking
patterns, terminology, and even some
practice exercises to hone it down.
