Recent mild winters have let several
garden pests take center stage.
Though there are many to choose
from, ants, slugs and sod webworm
have been the most troublesome. But
with early detection and a few simple
steps these pests can be easily
controlled.
Ants
This year, as in the past few, ants
have been aggravating lawns and
gardens throughout the Edmonton
area. Note that ants are mostly
scavengers, rarely feeding on garden
plants but instead on decomposing
material or nectar from blooms.
However, if tunnels become extensive
they can cause damage to gardens
or lawns. Because the queen
regulates the activity of the colony,
control is aimed at locating and
eliminating her.
Hills that are found in the lawn or
garden can be treated
with
various controls, note that most
will require more than one application.

Diatomaceous Earth - This nonchemical option kills ants by
dehydration or ingestion.
Green Earth Ant
Buster Nematodes Contains microscopic
nematodes that prey
on ant larvae.
Requires only one
application.
Doktor Doom
Residual - Leaves a
residue that lasts for
up to 60 days,
providing effective
control of ants that
come into contact
with the chemical.
Comes with a straw
that will help direct
the spray deep down
into the hill. Spray
the hill and other areas.
For large lawn areas, Wilson’s Ant and
Grub Killer concentrate can be mixed
and watered into the hill with a
watering can or hose end sprayer.
